Rising up from the ashes

Sevina, above, attends the school thanks to an Orphan's Promise scholarship. The 7-year-old joined the school last year and moved through first and second grade in just two terms.

MACHA, Zambia - After a fire charred the only school in the region, students were left with nothing but the ashes.

Thanks to Operation Blessing's Orphan's Promise, the school is being rebuilt, and new programs and educational materials have been donated to the school.

In fact, the co-ed school, which is currently meeting in living rooms and kitchens, recently send home report cards after finishing the first term.

"Our last week of the term was filled with exciting experiences and fun," said Ronda Krause, who works with the school.

In addition to the $15,000 it took to rebuild the school, Orphan's Promise also supplied the funds to install a computer lab and library.

To cap off the school year, students were treated to lessons from a professional dancer from Holland and it culminated with a recital. In addition, another local artist from Holland gave lessons in writing and illustration.

"Everyone is very excited to participate in all the extra fun school activities," Krause said.

Currently, the roof on the school is under construction. The rafters are in place in parts of the building and new window frames are being installed. Ceiling boards are waiting to go in the classroom areas and additional plumbing in the bathroom and shower areas is also being installed. Final touches include a veranda.

Once the new building is done, Krause says she hopes it will help students thrive. Students just like Sevina.

Sevina's mom died more than a year ago and she went to live with her grandmother, who cares for several other orphan grandchildren on a limited income.

The 7-year-old joined the school last year through an Orphan's Promise scholarship and moved through first and second grade in just two terms. Even though she has to walk 2.5 miles to and from school, she still manages to get there each day.

"The students did very well even under the difficult situation of a delayed start," Krause said. "We can't wait for the classes that are meeting in living rooms and kitchens in the wooden house to finally move into the new building."
